South Africa sprinter Bayanda Walaza’s participation in next week’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, is in doubt.

Walaza was this week named in a 49-strong SA team for Tokyo.

The 19-year-old was leading the men’s 100m race when he sustained a hamstring injury at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, last month.

The injury has put his involvement in Tokyo in doubt with Athletics South Africa (ASA) saying his future participation will therefore be subject to the outcome of a standard medical examination.

ASA said the medical team has had the chance to evaluate the extent of Bayanda’s injury and the organisation will make an official pronouncement on the status of his participation.
