Tuskers won the toss and chose to bowl first under gloomy skies in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday morning.
The decision to bowl first paid off for the home team almost immediately when Mbulelo Budaza picked up the wicket of Modiri Litheko for 10 with the total on 27.
It was a fruitful period for the Tuskers who picked up wickets regularly with the second wicket falling with the total on 42 when Ronan Hermann was caught by Ntando Zuma off the bowling of Marcelo Piedt for nine.
Twenty-eight runs later the Tuskers had their third wicket when Cole Abrahams was caught by Sean Gilson for 12 off the bowling of Ziyaad Abrahams.
Tuskers then restricted the Heat to 83-4 when CP Klijnhans was bowled by spinner Sean Gilson for eight.
Heat opener Ernest Kemm held the fort for the visiting team as he went to a patient half century while his partner Abel Mokwena helped him rebuild the innings.
The pair took the Heat to 132-4 before the teams were forced from the field due to bad light after 54 overs.
Unfortunately, that is how the day would end as stumps was called early due to bad light.
