Philip Salt once again headlined an emphatic victory for the Kolkata Knight Riders with 68 from only 33 balls as they beat the Delhi Capitals by seven wickets with 21 balls to spare in their IPL match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday.

Delhi suffered a dismal batting performance as they limped to a modest 153-9 after choosing to bat first and KKR, led by Salt, attacked the target with gusto to move into second place on the log, four points behind the Rajasthan Royals.

KKR legspinner Varun Chakravarty revelled on a surface offering appreciable but not extravagant turn as he returned an excellent 3-16 in his four overs, including the key wickets of captain Rishabh Pant (27) and Tristan Stubbs (4) who top edged a sweep to cover and edged to the ‘keeper respectively.

Fellow spinner Sunil Narine was no less effective, bowling Axar Patel (15) in his return of 1-24.

Opening bowler Vaibhav Arora (2-29) claimed two wickets in the Power Play to set Delhi back immediately.

Opener Prithvi Shaw (13) was caught down the legside in the second over and Jake Fraser-McGurk (12) whipped a Mitchell Starc (3-0-43-1) delivery straight to the sole fielder on the legside boundary.

Arora bowled Shai Hope (6) and it was symbolic of Delhi’s plight that spinner Kuldeep Yadav top-scored with a doughty 35 from 26 balls with five fours and a six.

The run chase was never in doubt with Salt belting seven fours and five sixes and the Iyers, captain Shreyas (33*) and Venkatesh (26*), ending the contest with ease.

The home team were at the head of a remarkable five-team logjam on 10 points but now have sole possession of second place on 12 points – and with the best net run-rate in the tournament.

Delhi remain in the logjam in third place but have played one game more than their rivals for a place in the playoffs.
