Dewald Brevis struck a 19-ball 50 to help the Chennai Super Kings reach a daunting total of 230-5 and a comfortable victory by 83 runs against the Gujarat Titans in their IPL match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday afternoon.

The Titans have been the form team for most of the tournament but slumped to 147 all out and have now lost their last two games by heavy margins; a victory in either would have ensured a top-two finish.

Seamer Anshul Kamboj claimed 3-13 in 2.3 overs while Afghan left- arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmed claimed 3-21 to ensure CSK finished an otherwise dismal tournament with a powerful consolation victory.

Chennaiโ€™s best batting performance of the tournament was underpinned by excellent top-order runs from Devon Conway who finally found form with 52 from 35 balls (6x4, 2x6) and opening partner Ayush Mhatre whose 34 from 17 balls included an eye-watering 28 from the second over of the innings bowled by Arshad Khan (2-0-42-0).

Mhatre clubbed three fours and three sixes while Urvil Patel and Shivam Dube maintained the momentum in the middle order with 37 from 19 balls and 17 off eight before Brevis upped the tempo with some glorious stroke play on a benign batting pitch finishing with 57 from just 23 deliveries with four fours and five sixes to most parts of the ground.

Six of the seven Gujarat bowlers conceded over 10 runs per over โ€“ including Gerald Coetzee whose three overs cost 34 โ€“ while seamer Prasidh Krishna was the notable outlier with a brilliant 4-0-22-2 amidst the carnage at the other end.

The result leaves Gujarat precariously placed at the top of the log with 18 points but with no league games remaining.

Punjab Kings (17), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (17) and Mumbai Indians (16) can all pass Gujarat with one league match each still to play.
