Zamalek, Wydad off to perfect start as Simba flop

Zamalek and Wydad Athletic Club got off to the perfect start in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage on Sunday, as Simba SC were humbled in the Champions League.

Seifeddine Jaziri was the hero as his first-half goal earned Zamalek a 1-0 victory over stubborn Zesco United of Zambia in a Group D match which was played at the Cairo International Stadium.

Zamalek's Egyptian rivals, Al Masry, also got maximum points in another Group D clash as Mohamed Hashem's 87th-minute goal earned the Green Eagles a 2-1 win over South African giants Kaizer Chiefs at the Suez Stadium.

At the Stade Mohammed V, Wydad secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over group stage debutants Nairobi United of Kenya, with Mohamed Bouchouari, Mohamed Rayhi and Ayoub Boucheta scoring in a Group B clash.

While Chadoma Ozome and Balako Christian Panzi were on the scoresheet as DR Congo's AS Maniema Union claimed a 2-0 victory over Tanzanian side Azam in a Group B encounter, which was played at the Stade des Martyrs.

Stellenbosch FC of South Africa, on the other hand, needed a stoppage time winner by South Africa international Ashley Cupido to claim a 1-0 victory over Congo-Brazzaville outfit AS Otoho at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

In Group A, Moroccan club Olympic Safi also claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Mali's Djoliba at the Stade du Mars, while Algerian side USM Alger edged out San Pedro 3-2 at the Stade du 5 Juillet.

Lastly, the only Champions League match which was played on Sunday saw Angolan giants Petro de Luanda secure a 1-0 win over Simba at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium courtesy of Benny's 78th minute goal in a Group D showdown.
