'Takuru' enjoying life at Sidama Coffee
Sidama Coffee star Firew Solomon, better known as 'Takuru, is enjoying his new lease on life at the Hawassa club.
Sidama Coffee were struggling early this season, but after the club made a change to its coaching crew, they have returned to winning ways, especially since the league fixtures have moved to the Hawassa University Stadium.
They won the first four matches that they played at Hawassa University Stadium, and Firew explains why the team hit such high notes.
"Our common unity, home advantage and the fact that our fans are on our side has lifted us out of the relegation zone."
Sidama Coffee are well known for their competitiveness in the league through the years. Their goal at the start of the season was to secure a place in African club competition.
"Since we finished third last season, our plan this year was to participate on the African stage. I hope that we will still finish with a good result. Until the 27th week, we will try to get full points in Hawassa."
The team was very active in the recent transfer window and Firew believes the new signings have strengthened the team.
Takuru is an established Ethiopia international and regarded as one of best midfielders in the Ethiopia Premier League, but he hasn't been at his best, especially the last two years.
"Yes, it's true, I admit that I wasn't in the best form these last two years, I wasn't at the level I wanted to be in 2021 and 2022, but I got injured and couldn't perform well. However, I think I'm doing better this season."
He has played many seasons in the Ethiopia Premier League and believes that he will performing at the top level for a long time to come.
"I believe that I will play for a long time, I am eager to do better for my club and prove my worth."
Firew hasn't had the opportunity to play in any other leagues yet, but he is dreaming of playing abroad and believes that the live transmission of the league will help him to get the chance one day.
He regards Elias Mamo, the former Saint George and Ethiopia Bunna player, as the best player in his position in Ethiopia and he also has a high regard for European stars Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta.
Takuru believes he can transfer his club form to the Ethiopian national team.
"This year, I have shown my strength and I'm sure that I will convince the coaches to to give me another chance."
He moved his family from Addis to Hawassa, so he can be closer to them.
"I am happy because I can see my family every night. Whether I am sad or happy, it is nice to be able to share my feelings with them. They give me great joy and inspire me to do well."
Takuru says that whether fighting for the trophy or trying to avoid relegation, the competition has been fierce in this league this year.
As most of the league followers think the league title will goes to either St George or Bahir Dar City. Firew added his voice to the predictions.
"I think this year's champion will be St George, but Bahir Dar City have really strengthened the competition."
