Heritage Day in South Africa is known for its warmth, not just in weather, but in spirit as citizens across the country celebrate the richness of their diverse cultures. This year was no exception, especially in the world of sport, where legendary South African football figures came together in the small Mpumalanga town of Belfast (Emakhazeni) to inspire the next generation of players.

South African icons Simphiwe Dludlu, Lehlohonolo Majoro, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, and Sekhukhune United midfielder Linda Mntambo visited the town to share their skills and experiences with local youth during a memorable football clinic.

The event, held on 24 September at Siyathuthuka Stadium, was hosted by Imizamo Yamakhosikazi to launch a meaningful community initiative: the Alfred Zwelibanzi Kids Football Clinics. Designed for under-15 learners from local Emakhazeni schools, the initiative aims to nurture budding talent, promote healthy lifestyles, and honour the legacy of the late Mr Alfred Zwelibanzi “Gubzen” Yingwane, a beloved figure known for his unwavering commitment to youth and sports development in the region.

More than just a sports event, the clinic offered young players the chance to sharpen their football skills, improve fitness, and foster a lifelong love for the game.

Former Bafana Bafana striker Lehlohonolo Majoro expressed his heartfelt appreciation for being involved:

“It was a great honour and privilege to be part of the Alfred Zwelibanzi Kids Football Clinics in remembrance of the late ‘Gubzen’, who was deeply passionate about developing local football. The love and dedication he had for this community live on through events like this. I applaud the organisers for keeping his spirit alive, and I look forward to many more successful years of this initiative, not to mention the amazing food made with love and warmth!”

Linda Mntambo, known for both his skill and his leadership, emphasised the importance of current and former professionals giving back:

“It’s vital for us as players to contribute to grassroots development, not just in sports, but in helping tackle issues like drug and alcohol abuse that are hurting our communities. My journey is proof that your background doesn't define your destiny. If you stay disciplined, consistent, and open to learning, anything is possible. I hope we planted a meaningful seed in at least one child’s life. As the Zulu saying goes: 'Ligotshwa lisemanzi’—shape a tree while it’s still young.”

Former Banyana Banyana captain and football analyst Simphiwe Dludlu also praised the event’s impact:

“This was more than just a milestone; it was a legacy in motion. Mr Yingwane’s children, through this initiative, honoured their father in the most beautiful way. They brought us legends together, not just to inspire, but to actively teach and engage with the children. It wasn’t just talk, we were on the pitch, connecting with the kids, sharing real knowledge and our skills.

For me, being part of this milestone and legacy warms my heart so much, because the event was organised and hosted by young women, who say sport has done so much for them. They want those young lives to have hope through sport.

This is the tool that brings people together, so it was really an honour to be part of such an event on Heritage Day, which is the day that we celebrate because it reminds us of our roots and who we are as a nation. As a country, we are deeply rooted in our beliefs, and sport is part of our beliefs.
I truly believe this is only the beginning of a long-lasting, positive impact in this community.”

The Alfred Zwelibanzi Kids Football Clinics are more than just training sessions; they are a tribute to a local hero and a commitment to nurturing future stars from small towns like Emakhazeni. As the sun set over Belfast on Heritage Day, it was clear that something meaningful had begun: a movement driven by passion, unity, and a shared belief in the power of sport to transform lives.
