Former Croatia captain Zvonimir Boban has returned to Dinamo Zagreb, where he started his career, as chairman, the club confirmed on Monday.

The 56-year-old played for Dinamo between 1985 and 1991 before moving on to AC Milan, Bari and Celta Vigo.

He skippered the Croatia team that finished third in the 1998 World Cup, later going on to serve world governing body Fifa as both deputy secretary and director of football.

"We have shown that the club respects its history and its legends," said club president Velimir Zajec at a press conference.

Boban's appointment is seen as a strategic move to reinforce the club's position both domestically and internationally.

It also comes less than a week after the club parted ways with head coach Fabio Cannavaro, former Italy captain and World Cup winner, who was dismissed last Wednesday — barely three months into his tenure.

Dinamo are third in the table, trailing leaders Rijeka by seven points with seven games remaining.

"To our players, I wish a dream end to the season," said Boban, who will officially assume the role on 1 June.
