Light but persistent rain and a saturated outfield caused South Africa’s Champions Trophy match against Australia at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium to be abandoned without a ball bowled on Tuesday.

Each team takes one point to add to the two they earned with their opening victories leaving Wednesday’s match in Lahore between England and Afghanistan as a straight knockout with the loser set to join Pakistan and Bangladesh as the third team to be eliminated.

Both teams won their opening matches in convincing fashion with South Africa overcoming Afghanistan by 107 runs after totalling 315-6 while Australia chased down a formidable 351-8 set by England to win by five wickets with 15 balls to spare.

South Africa’s final group match against England will take place in Karachi on Saturday and will become another knockout match provided England beat Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Should Afghanistan win that match then they will progress to the semifinals with a second victory against Australia in Lahore on Friday.

The semifinals will take place on Tuesday, 4 March and Wednesday, 5 March with the final being staged on Sunday, 9 March in either Lahore or Dubai depending on whether India have qualified.
