A late try from Dawid Brits gave the Springbok Sevens their second win in the Perth 7s on Friday as they sneaked past hosts Australia 10-7 in their pool match to end day one unbeaten.

The Blitzboks made life difficult for themselves after dominating the first half, but their inability to finish off moves saw Australia score a late try to lead 7-5 going into the final minutes.

But as it so often does, the Blitzboks defence was the basis for their win. Australia, on their own line, tried to run the ball, and the rush defence forced them into a mistake, with Brits pouncing on a dropped ball and showing the strength to stretch the ball over the line.

That came after Dewald Human missed a golden opportunity in the first half to extend the early lead with a chip and chase before knocking on the ball as he went over the line.

The first try came after sustained pressure, a power scrum and a simple backline move that saw Donavan Don go over in the corner.

The Blitzboks won their first match against the USA 24-19 thanks to a late try by Ronald Brown to be the only unbeaten team in the pool.

Defending Perth champions Argentina were shocked by a late golden point try by USA while Australia have lost both their games thus far in the tournament.

The Blitzboks final game will now be against Argentina on Saturday at 7.50am (CAT, GMT+2).

In the upsets of the tournament Uruguay followed up their shock win over Fiji with another shock win over New Zealand in their second game of the tournament.

The All Blacks lost 17-14 to the South American upstarts.

Kenya lost their second game of the tournament, going down 21-14 to Fiji after an earlier loss to New Zealand.
