City promotion hopes dashed in Magesi stalemate
Cape Town City missed the opportunity to play Betway Premiership football next season following a 1-1 draw with Magesi in their final Promotion-Relegation Playoff fixture at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
In an afternoon to forget for the former top flight side, City could only manage a draw on home soil after Mcedi Vandala cancelled out Therlo Moosaβs first-half effort with a goal soon after the restart.

Taking to a sunny pitch in Athlone, City and Magesi commenced the game at a timid pace with neither side creating any clear-cut scoring chances inside the first 10 minutes.
However, City found themselves on the back foot on a couple of occasions as Magesi took the direct approach toward their opponentβs goal.
City battled to trouble their opponents midway through the first half; most of their opportunities came through counter-attacking moments.
While City appeared patient in their build-up approach, Magesi recorded numerous shots at goal, many of which Luca Diana-Oliaro saved in goal.
The home side kicked into gear moments before the break and managed to break the deadlock in the 42nd minute after Therlo Moosa capped off a well-worked passing move with an instinctive finish from close range after the goalkeeper parried the ball in his direction.
MAGESI EYE TOP SPOT
Magesi levelled the score soon after the restart through Mcedi Vandala, silencing the crowd at the Athlone Stadium.
After direct play inside the City half, Vandala latched onto a well-weighted through ball, rounded the goalkeeper, and finished from a tight angle.
The visitors' goal appeared to have winded Cityβs progress, as the hosts battled to gain a foothold in the game. In their response to adversity, the Citizens often looked to attack through transition moments.
It was Magesiβs turn to play on the break with around 80 minutes on the clock, given Cityβs forward pressure in possession. However, the Mother City outfit yielded little fruit going forward.
Magesi survived an onslaught of attacks during the closing stages of the match, including an effort that rattled the crossbar during stoppage time.
Nonetheless, the away side managed to secure a point through a tense battle to see out the game.
As it stands, City are in last position on the mini-table, having accumulated four points from four matches.
The win leaves second-placed Magesi in a position to claim top spot when they take on Milford on Saturday, with the two sides being separated by just two points heading into their final match of the 2025/26 campaign.
