Wembley Tennis Club from the Eastern Cape emerged triumphant at the national finals of the American Express Clubs Championship, held at Sun City Resort in the North West on Sunday, 31 August. Their victory marks a historic milestone, as they became the first club from the Eastern Cape to win the championship.

After securing wins in both of their opening-round matches, Wembley advanced to the playoffs where they defeated North West University and Bellevue Tennis Club from KwaZulu-Natal. Bellevue claimed the runner-up position after a strong showing throughout the tournament.

Wembley Tennis Club was awarded R32 000 in prize money for their championship win, while Bellevue earned R15 000 for finishing second.

Representing the host province, North West University clinched third place by defeating Camps Bay Tennis Club from Cape Town in the playoff.

A total of 12 clubs competed in the national finals, including the winners of the provincial qualifying tournaments and three wildcard entries.

Reflecting on the success of the nationwide campaign, Tennis South Africa General Manager Anthony Moruthane said: “Congratulations to all the teams that competed at the American Express Clubs Championship finals, and to Wembley Tennis Club for winning the overall title. This is the first time a team from the Eastern Cape has won the national title. The level of competition we have seen - not only at the finals but throughout the provincial tournaments - has been superb. It’s encouraging to witness the depth and quality of talent in South African tennis. The sport is clearly in a good space, and the future looks bright.”
