New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and elected to field in the first test against England at Lord's on Thursday.

Overcast skies encouraged Latham to deploy an impressive pace attack led by the fit-again Matt Henry in the 150th test staged at Lord's.

England, in their first test since a woeful 4-1 Ashes series loss in Australia, gave a test debut to opening batsman Emilio Gay after dropping Zak Crawley.

There were recalls for seamer Ollie Robinson and offspinner Shoaib Bashir, while Gus Atkinson was preferred to uncapped fast bowler Sonny Baker, who had been included in a 12-man squad.

The Lord's match is the first of a three-match series.
