Mayo signs for Chiefs on loan from Algeria

Kaizer Chiefs have signed Khanyisa Mayo, making the ex-South Africa international striker their 11th acquisition of the season and handing the 27-year-old a chance to revive his career after being sidelined in Algeria.
Mayo, who last played for South Africa in March 2024, left Cape Town City in June last year to join Chabab Belouizdad of Algeria, where he helped the club to finish third in the Algerian league, reach the National Cup final and also participate in the group stages of last season’s African Champions League.
He scored four league goals and two cup goals, but had been sidelined at the start of the new campaign and, after reports that CRB wanted to offload him, has signed a one-year loan deal with Chiefs.
“It’s no secret that we wanted to bring Khanyisa to Naturena before his move to Algeria,” said Chiefs director Kaizer Motaung Jr in a statement.
“He has a proven track record in the league, and we believe he will add significant value to the squad this season when we play in the league, as well as on the continent. He joins a select group of athletes who’ve made their families proud by following in their footsteps. We are truly happy to have him here and wish him all the best.”
Mayo’s father Patrick Mayo played at the club and he joins Kaizer Motaung and Kaizer Motaung Jr.; Eliakim Khumalo and Doctor Khumalo; Joseph Mkhonza and Siphiwe Mkhonza; Fabian McCarthy and Aden McCarthy and the father and son duo of Goodenough Nkomo and Morgan Gould in keeping up family tradition at the club.
Mayo spent three seasons at Cape Town City and scored 29 goals in 73 starts. He was the Golden Boot winner as the league’s top scorer for the 2022-23 season.
