The 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) is set to be a landmark football event, taking place from 2 to 30 August.

This edition will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, marking the first time the tournament is held across three nations.

What is CHAN?

The CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) is a biennial football competition organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Unlike the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), CHAN is exclusively for players who compete in their home country’s domestic leagues.

This format highlights and promotes local talent across the African continent.

2024 CHAN Host Nations

  • Kenya will host the final match.
  • Tanzania will stage the opening match.
  • Uganda will host the third-place playoff.

This tri-nation hosting arrangement also serves as a test run for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will also be held in these three East African countries.

Tournament Format and Teams

A total of 19 national teams will participate in CHAN 2024. These teams are divided into three groups:

  • Group A: Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia
  • Group B: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
  • Group C: Uganda, Niger, Guinea, Algeria, South Africa

Each group will play in one of the host countries, with the top teams advancing to the knockout stages.

Defending Champions and Contenders

  • Senegal enter the tournament as the defending champions.
  • Morocco and DR Congo are both two-time CHAN winners.
  • Other strong contenders include Nigeria, Bafana Bafana and Zambia.
