Two Oceans jumpstarts SuperSport’s coverage of 2025 marathon season

Road running queen Gerda Steyn will again be the top athlete to watch when the starting gun goes off at the 54th Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon in Cape Town on Saturday.
The 54th Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, one of the most scenic and iconic races on the planet, begins in Cape Town on Saturday 5 April 2025, jumpstarting SuperSport’s 2025 Marathon Season coverage.
While Your World of Champions, SuperSport, has already showcased the Barcelona, Rome and NYC Half marathons in March, Two Oceans marks the first Ultra Marathon broadcast on SuperSport this season, kicking the marathon season well into gear.
SA’s Gerda Steyn, women’s record-holder and icon of the sport, is again the top runner to watch at this year’s race, where she will likely be tailed by compatriot, teammate and fellow Olympian Irvette van Zyl. The two are set to battle it out, stride-for-stride, for the right to be crowned the fastest woman over 56 kilometres.
For Steyn, SA’s reigning road-running queen, Two Oceans presents an opportunity for a sixth successive title and to cement her place as one of the greatest athletes the country has ever produced.
Watch Gerda Steyn's journey in an exclusive film documentary on Your World of Champions, SuperSport, on DStv CatchUp.
In the men’s race, defending champion Onalenna Khonkhobe is determined to make history with a back-to-back win. After an unforgettable triumph in 2024, where he stormed to victory in 3:09:30, Khonkhobe announced his arrival to the ultra-distance world. His Nedbank teammate Lloyd Bosman, who finished second in 2024, will be looking to go one place further this time around.
2023 winner Givemore Mudzinganyama, who finished third last year, as well as four-time Olympian and three-time Cape Town Marathon champion Stephen Mokoka, are two elite runners who can never be ruled out of any race.
SuperSport’s coverage of this year’s marathons will move to Rotterdam (13th), Paris (13th), Boston (21st), Madrid (27th) and London (27th) before the month of April concludes, making it one of the most exciting periods for road running on the calendar.
On 8 June, the Comrades Marathon hits the tar as the world’s gaze fixes on one of the world’s most storied Ultra Marathons. The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon headlines in October, while the African Bank Soweto Marathon take place on 2 November.
