Highlands Park captain Tapuwa Kapini has lauded Wayne Sandilands as one of the most outstanding goalkeepers in the country this season.

The Zimbabwean shot-stopper, who has been plying his trade in South Africa since 2006, was discussing the performances of goalkeepers in the current PSL campaign.

Having been sidelined by a long-term injury, Kapini, 35, made his return to the Highlands starting line-up against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal clash last month.

SuperSport.com caught up with the former Platinum Stars and AmaZulu FC captain as he reflects on the current season.

What are your thoughts on how your team has performed thus far?

The team has done relatively well this season. We reached the 2019 MTN8 final and nobody expected us to go that far.

The guidance of the coaches and club directors has been very important. Everyone has been playing their part.

We have advanced beyond the first round in all cup competitions this season. So far so good for us.

Who has been the best goalkeeper this season?

All the goalkeepers in the PSL have been outstanding. Look at a guy like Elvis Chipezeze at Baroka FC.

He has been doing well despite his team being in the relegation zone. He has been saving them week in, week out.

For me, the goalkeeper who is among the best this season is Richard Ofori of Maritzburg United and there is also Ronwen Williams at SuperSport United. He has been impressive.

There is also Wayne Sandilands...

Wayne Sandilands has been brilliant for Orlando Pirates, but somehow people are not talking about him. Since he took over from Joris Delle, he has done a good job.

Even my teammates, Thela Ngobeni and Marlon Heugh have performed well. Unfortunately, Ngobeni got injured and Heugh stepped in, and he excelled.

You cannot leave out Daniel Akpeyi at Kaizer Chiefs. He has been impressive filling Itumeleng Khune's big shoes.

How are you coping with lockdown?

Life matters more than anything else. The government has done well by stopping almost everything. I don't have any problem with the lockdown.

I am a family man and I am coping well with the current situation. The club has been sending us training programmes every week and we are using them.

I know the supporters are stressing because they want to come out and watch their teams play.

But it is important to stay home and save lives. We have to support one another during the current lockdown.
