Gurswin Wehr scored a first-rate hat-trick to help the Suzuki Griquas march to a commanding 42-21 win over the Vodacom Bulls in their Carling Currie Cup encounter at Grizzly Park in Daspoort on Sunday afternoon.

This is the Griquas' fourth victory of the competition and their first victory on the road this season.

The Bulls came into the tie looking for a win after two losses, only to suffer a third.

The victory lifted the Griquas to 19 points. They are now third on the log.

The Bulls controlled possession and territory in the first six minutes of the contest.

They patiently worked their way through a resolute Griquas defence that refused to budge.

The home side's relentless drive was rewarded when centre Stravino Jacobs tore through the line to open the scoring with a try after six minutes.

Boeta Chamberlain raised the flag for the hosts with a conversion.

The visitors' response was almost immediate. The visitors registered 14 points in the next nine minutes to take the lead.

Mr Magic, Gurswin Wehr, planted two tries, four minutes apart. The 26-year-old caused problems for the Bulls on the left side with his speed and footwork.

The first was a well-worked team effort, and the second, a result of individual brilliance after intercepting a pass in the Bulls' half.

Fly-half George Whitehead converted both with ease.

Wehr's brace was the beginning of the Griquas' march. They extended their lead after 23 minutes through Cebo Dlamini's diving try, next to one of the posts.

And as he did with the first two, Whitehead made no mistake with the conversion.

The Griquas found spaces to advance into the Bulls' territory on their hunt for a fourth try in the first half. But the hosts denied them the points.

The visitors took a 21-7 lead to the break.

TWO LATE BULLS TRIES BRING SOME HOME CHEER

However, Griquas didn't have to wait long for the bonus point try. The Bulls' captain Nama Xaba received a yellow card early in the second half and the visitors took advantage of the numbers.

Wehr, the Player of the Match, delivered the bonus-point try two minutes into the second half.

The winger received a looping pass from Whitehead before making good ground to cross the line. Whitehead made no mistake with the conversion.

The men from Kimberley extended their advantage three minutes later, when Janco Uys broke away from the maul to plant their fifth try. Whitehead's conversion left the score at 35-7.

The visitors seemed to lose concentration as the game wore on, as handling errors mounted.

However, the Griquas showed that they were still very much engaged with a sixth try, through centre Zane Bester after 69 minutes.

Whitehead, who had his kicking boots on, made no mistake with the conversion.

The hosts took long to reply to the Griquas' six tries.

However, they did give the home crowd something to cheer for with two late tries.

Junior Pokomela and Katlego Letebele crossed the line in the last five minutes, before Chamberlain launched his second and third conversions of the afternoon.
