No huge upsets in Nedbank Cup as Galaxy ease into Last 16
TS Galaxy became the latest club to secure a place in the Last 16 of the 2024-25 Nedbank Cup after they eviscerated lower league club Vasco da Gama 7-0 on Wednesday evening.
The Rockets triumphed at the Mbombela Stadium courtesy of goals from Dzenan Zajmovic (two), Keagan Dolly, Marks Munyai, Thokozani Sibanyoni (two) and Damir Sovsic, closing out a run of 15 matches across six days which brought no headline-grabbing upsets, breaking the usual trend in this equivalent of England’s FA Cup.

The weekend’s headline results saw the ‘big three’ of Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs all safely advance.
The Brazilians defeated third-tier Sibanye Golden Stars 5-2 at home; the Buccaneers overpowered Richards Bay 3-1 away (inspired by a brace from Patrick Maswanganyi); and Chiefs avoided a banana skin against minnows Free Agents with a comfortable 4-0 triumph at the FNB Stadium.
The weekend also saw Chippa United edge fellow Premiership side Golden Arrows; Marumo Gallants got the better of Pretoria Callies; Durban City, Baroka FC, Cape Town Spurs and Polokwane City all secured expected victories; and lower-league Mpheni Home Defenders upset second-tier Hungry Lions 3-1 courtesy of goals from Rophney Hlungwane, Brendon Mokgope and Halatedzi Matumba.
The Last 32 action continued into the working week, with Monday bringing a 2-0 win for Sekhukhune United over fellow Premiership side Cape Town City; while Tuesday saw top flight clubs AmaZulu FC (with a hat-trick from Sandile Mthethwa) and Stellenbosch FC overcome lower league opponents Mighty Eagles and Kruger United respectively; as well as a 2-0 win for SuperSport United over Carling Knockout champions Magesi FC.
In the draw for the Last 16, the heavyweights avoided one another.
Mamelodi Sundowns will battle Mpheni Home Defenders; Kaizer Chiefs face fellow Premiership side Chippa United; and Orlando Pirates will battle Baroka FC – a club which made its name in the Nedbank Cup with a run to the semifinals in 2011.
TS Galaxy will be away to Durban City; Marumo Gallants v AmaZulu, and Stellenbosch FC v Polokwane City are all-Premiership ties; SuperSport United will host Cape Town Spurs; and the one tie with an asterisk above it sees Sekhukhune United away to either Royal AM or Milford FC.
Royal’s status remains unclear, with their matches suspended due to ongoing financial concerns, and whether their outstanding Last 32 tie is played at all remains to be seen.
The Last 16 is scheduled to be played on the weekend of 14-16 February.
