RIO RISES! Did a 16 year old really just do that?!

Premier League matchweek two ended not with a whimper, but a thunderclap — and it came from the boot of a 16-year-old.

Forget City’s stumble, Arsenal’s demolition job, or Bruno Fernandes’ missed penalty. The real drama unfolded at St James’ Park, where Liverpool and Newcastle served up a five-goal thriller.

With Alexander Isak missing from the starting XI, Anthony Gordon stepped up — only to be sent off for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk just before halftime. Liverpool looked in control at 2–0 after scoring in the first minute of the second half, but Newcastle clawed back through Bruno Guimarães and William Osula, igniting hopes of a famous comeback.

THEN CAME RIO

On the pitch for just four minutes, Rio Ngumoha — all 16 years and 361 days of him — latched onto a Salah pass dummied by Szoboszlai and rifled home a right-footed rocket in the 100th minute. Cue bedlam. Cue history.

Ngumoha became the youngest goalscorer in Liverpool’s 133-year history and only the second 16-year-old to net a Premier League winner — joining Wayne Rooney’s legendary club.

WHO IS RIO NGUMOHA?

- Joined Liverpool from Chelsea’s academy in September 2024
- England Under-17 international with a flair for the spectacular
- Starred in pre-season with goals v AC Milan, Bilbao, and Yokohama F. Marinos
- Made his senior debut in the FA Cup v Accrington Stanley

SCORED TWICE IN PREMIER LEAGUE 2 LAST SEASON

Now the fourth-youngest scorer in Premier League history — just one day older than Rooney when he made his mark

Ngumoha’s rise has been meteoric, but Monday night felt like liftoff. From youth prospect to headline hero in 100 minutes flat — Liverpool may have just unearthed their next superstar.
