Jandiroba emerges as title contender after victory over Lemos

Virna Jandiroba has emerged as a title contender in the women’s strawweight division after claiming an impressive win over Amanda Lemos in a UFC Fight Night at the APEX Facility in Las Vegas on the morning of Sunday 21 July 2024.

This match was supposed to be a classic ‘striker v grappler’ encounter, but Lemos made the mistake of trying to take on Jandiroba on the ground. Ultimately she was submitted near the end of round two via an arm-bar, with ‘Caraca’ then calling for a title shot against Zhang Weili in her post-fight interview.

“I'm the next one. I'm the one who needs to get the title shot," she said through an interpreter. "I feel I prepared myself to be a champion. I'm the next champion. The champ is here.”

The rest of the main card saw Steve Garcia stop Choi Seung-woo in the first round of their featherweight fight; Kurt Holobaugh outpointed Kaynan Kruschewsky in their lightweight clash; Bruno Gustavo da Silva stopped Cody Durden in round two of their flyweight match; Choi Doo-ho got the better of Bill Algeo in a featherweight showdown; and another featherweight fight saw Hyder Amil make quick work of Lee Jeong-yeong.

Next weekend brings UFC 304, set for the Co-op Live in Manchester, England, on the morning of Sunday 28 July. This will feature matches for the welterweight championship between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad, as well as the interim heavyweight championship between Tom Aspinall and Curtis Blaydes.
