Jemimah Rodrigues and Marizanne Kapp combined to take the Delhi Capitals Women to a thrilling seven-wicket victory in their Womens Premier League match against the Mumbai Indians Women at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadadora on Tuesday night.

Replying to MI Womens 154-5 captain Rodrigues was joined by Kapp at 118-3 at the start of the 17th over but calm, meticulous batting saw Rodrigues reach 51* from 37 balls with five fours and a six while Kapp, initially, was happy to provide support.

But the great South African allrounder finished the match in style with a six over midwicket against Nat Sciver-Brunt to finish on 10* from six balls with an over to spare.

Lizelle Lee provided the platform for victory with a typically rumbunctious 46 from only 28 balls (7x4, 1x6) while dominating an opening partnership of 63 with Shafali Verma whose composed 29 came from 24 balls.

Laura Wolvaardt was equally composed with 17 from 19 balls before a horrible run out at the non-striker’s end finished her contribution with a Rodrigues drive deflecting off Sciver-Brunt’s hand onto the stumps.

Earlier the ever-reliable England captain, Sciver-Brunt, crafted a fine innings of 65* from 45 balls in which she targeted certain bowlers and displayed deference for others – like Kapp who struck early to remove brilliant Barbadian, Hayley Matthews (12), and returned the remarkable analysis of 4-0-8-1.

A third wicket partnership of 78 with captain Marmanpreet Kaur (41 from 33 balls) laid the foundation for a higher total but batting conditions weren’t perfect and Australia’s Nicola Carey could muster just 12 from 11 balls in the closing overs in which left-arm spinner Shree Charani (4-0-33-3) claimed two wickets.

Kaur admitted afterwards that her team were “…probably 20-30 runs short of what we wanted.”

The result leaves a remarkable looking log with Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women six points clear with 10 points and five victories from as many games while the remaining four teams are all tied on four points with two victories.
