Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ captain Prenelan Subrayen claimed 4-46 as the home team restricted the DP World Lions to 183 for nine in a reduced 43 overs in their CSA One-Day Cup clash at Kingsmead in Durban on Wednesday.

The Lions largely owed their total to Delano Potgieter, whose undefeated 56 in 54 balls (5x4s, 1x6) provided the late ballast that the innings required. It was his ninth List A 50 and was full of good sense and clinical execution.

The reduced overs were due to a late start because of an overnight cloudburst which caused localised flooding. The 2pm start, an hour late, meant that each team was scheduled to face 43 overs.

The Dolphins won the toss and fielded first on a sticky pitch where fluent strokeplay was difficult. Reeza Hendricks went cheaply, losing his leg stump to a delivery from Okuhle Cele that nipped back. But Wandile Makwetu and Zubayr Hamza repaired the damage with a second-wicket partnership of 57 in 84 balls before Makwetu was bowled by Subrayen while attempting to sweep.

Makwetu’s dismissal signalled a good spell for the Dolphins as the visitors lost five wickets for 27 runs, with Tristan Luus particularly effective, conceding only 17 runs in his nine overs in exchange for the wicket of Richard Seletswane, on debut, for a duck.

Potgieter then took over, guiding his team to a challenging total in the circumstances, thanks to useful cameos from Bjorn Fortuin and Nqaba Peter. Cele, who began well with the wickets of Hendricks and Hamza, finally finished with 2-35 in his eight overs.
