Ruan Ackermann will be added to the DHL Stormers’ loose-forward resources next season.

The Stormers made the announcement that Ackermann, son of former Emirates Lions coach and current Junior Bok assistant Johan, will join from Gloucester, where he has played for the last eight seasons after starting his senior franchise and provincial career at the Lions.

Now 29, the Stormers are hoping that the Ackermann’s years playing in the English Premiership will add depth to a group of loose-forwards that is also being strengthened by some quality youngsters, such as Paul de Villiers and Louw Nel, who have come through the age-group ranks and are now settling at senior level.

Described as an all action flank, Ackermann is noted for his high work-rate and intensity on both sides of the ball, which are ingredients that Stormers director of rugby John Dobson places a high premium on.

“Ruan is a proven performer who puts in the kind of hard work that our game model requires. Our fans can expect complete commitment from him for every minute he spends in our jersey,” said Dobson.

“We are very excited to see the impact he will make here and I’m confident that he will become a firm favourite at DHL Stadium.”

Ackermann said that he cannot wait to get to Cape Town and link up with his new teammates.

“The support for rugby in Cape Town is second to none and there are obviously some incredible players and coaches there, so I am looking forward to what should be an exciting new journey for me and my family,” he said.

“I’m ready to give everything I have to the cause and make a positive contribution in any way I can as part of what will be a strong squad next season.”
