Samson, Hosein power Chennai to crushing win over Mumbai

Sanju Samson struck a brilliant century while left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein grabbed 4-17 to power the Chennai Super Kings to an overwhelming 103-run victory over their biggest rivals Mumbai Indians in their Tata IPL clash at the Wankede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday night.

Chennai’s resounding win sends them up the table with six points while Mumbai are now struggling with four.

It was also a huge morale-boosting win for the team in yellow. Chennai and Mumbai have been the dominant teams in the IPL with five wins apiece but there was no disguising Chennai’s massive superiority tonight with Mumbai suffering their biggest-ever IPL defeat.

Samson’s unbeaten 101 in 54 balls (10x4s, 6x6s) – he reached his hundred off the last ball of the innings – was the headline act in the Chennai innings of 207-6 after the visitors were put in to bat by the home team. 

In fact, there were no half-century partnerships in Chennai’s innings, but there didn’t need to be with Samson’s mature and clear-headed knock forming the backbone of the innings.

It was his fifth IPL hundred and his second for his new franchise. It was enough that he was supported by a succession of brisk cameos by the likes of Dewald Brevis (21 in 11 balls) and Jamie Overton (15 off seven).

The best bowlers for Mumbai were AM Ghazanfar (2-25) and master paceman Jasprit Bumrah (1-31) but Pandya went for 38 in two overs and scored only one with the bat in a poor game for the skipper.

Ironically, the biggest partnership of the match was that of 73 for the fourth wicket by Suryakumar Yadav (35) and Tilak Varma (37) for Mumbai, but the pace was slow with the runs coming in 56 balls against some excellent bowling , and once the pair had been dismissed there was no hope for the home team who crumbled to 104 all out in 19 overs.

The bowling hero for Chennai was the Trinidadian left-arm spinner Hosein who got the ball to grip early on, having Danish Malewar caught behind and then bowling Naman Dhir. Both men went for ducks and with Quinton de Kock playing on to Mukesh Choudhary for seven, Mumbai found themselves 11 for three halfway through the third over.

Hosein was given good support from his spin twin, left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad, who took the wickets of Pandya and Sherfane Rutherford in consecutive deliveries to finish with 2-23.

The remaining wickets were shared out at one apiece for the other four Chennai bowlers in an outstanding team display.
