Islam Makhachev became the latest UFC fighter to claim ‘Double Champ’ status in the popular Mixed Martial Arts promotion after defeating Jack Della Maddalena in dominant fashion at UFC322 on Saturday night.

The new UFC Welterweight Champion took to Madison Square Gardens with history in sight, as his win against Maddalena saw him become the 11th fighter to win titles in two weight divisions.

As expected, Makhachev looked to take the Australian down early in the fight and did just so. While the 34-year-old looked comfortable standing up by landing impactful blows, Makhachev dominated Maddalena on the ground for much of the first three rounds.

Makhachev grew stronger as the fight progressed and gave the former champion no room to breath. The elite grappler stormed to a unanimous decision win across five rounds, while he also equalled Anderson Silva’s record for the most consecutive victories in UFC history with 16.

“This is a dream,” Makhachev said after the fight.

“All of my work for these two belts. I am really happy. The belt is so heavy and I like it. I worked hard for this moment. My life has changed.

“No cut weight, five round non-stop, I can wrestle, I can do whatever I want. This is my plan. It’s not a secret. My opponents all know this and nobody can stop it.”
