In what has been one of the closest PSL league races in recent memory, Mamelodi Sundowns will look to go one step closer to securing the Betway Premiership title when they take on Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday evening.

Set for their ninth league title in a row, Sundowns will head into their next game sitting in pole position after accumulating 64 points from 27 matches. The Brazilians are also five points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand.

Amid their duty in the CAF Champions League, Sundowns recorded back-to-back wins over Polokwane City in their last two league outings, noting three victories and two draws in their previous handful of Betway Premiership games.

With Sundowns kicking into gear, Pirates faltered in their most recent league game following their 1-1 draw with Chiefs in the Soweto Derby on 26 April. The Sea Robbers will now look to make amends as they are scheduled to take on Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium on Tuesday evening.

In the grander scheme of things, Pirates need a win against the Cape Winelands side to keep up with the pace set by Downs; a loss could open an eight-point gap to Sundowns with three games left on their schedule.

While the title race reaches fever pitch, the likes of Marumo Gallants and Orbit College are attempting to escape the relegation zone's gravitational pull.

Sitting in 16th place, Orbit College will face 14th placed Magesi on Tuesday, with the latter likewise facing the possibility of relegation. As it stands, Orbit are one point away from safety, while 15th positioned Marumo Gallants and Magesi share the same number of points (21) with four games left to play.

Gallants will thus take on TS Galaxy on Wednesday evening, as they look to overcome their run of three consecutive stalemates. Nonetheless, major changes in the bottom order could well take place this week, given the slight point difference between the bottom three clubs.
