Chippa claim clutch win over Durban City
Chippa United gave their Betway Premiership survival hopes a major boost on Saturday afternoon when they claimed a 2-0 win over Durban City at the Buffalo City Stadium.
Sinoxolo Kwayiba scored a brace of goals – taking advantage of a pair of defensive errors from the visitors – to secure the Chilli Boys a second successive league win (and a third of the season overall).

The result lifted them out of the relegation playoff spot and into 14th place, two points clear of the red zone.

As for the Citizens, they missed out on a hat-trick of league wins and suffered a sixth league loss of the campaign.
They remained in sixth place – seven points off the pace of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, having played two extra matches.
Chippa were the more enterprising team in the opening stages of the match, creating half chances for the likes of Sirgio Kammies and Justice Figuareido – neither of which was taken advantage of.
However, the Chilli Boys deservedly claimed the lead in the 33rd minute through Sinoxolo Kwayiba, who stole possession off dawdling City goalkeeper Darren Keet in the penalty area before steering a low shot into an unguarded net.
Kwayiba could have made it 2-0 seven minutes later when he was played in behind the defence on the right of the penalty area, but his low shot was blocked at the near post by the well-positioned Keet.
And the away side’s goalkeeper continued to make amends for his earlier mistake, producing a superb one-handed save to turn away a goal-bound shot from Figuareido in the 41st minute that seemed destined for the back of the net.
The second half saw Durban look to provide more attacking impetus in an attempt to get back into the match, but just past the hour mark they committed another defensive lapse to concede a second goal.
Defender Terrence Mashego looked to steer a header back towards Keet, but only succeeded in putting the ball into the path of Kwayiba, who gleefully latched onto the chance and put another low shot into the back of the net for 2-0.
The Citizens thought they had pulled a goal back with just over 10 minutes of regulation to play when substitute Ronaldo Maarman stabbed home from close range, but his effort was ruled out for a marginal offside.
The teams will meet again next Friday, 6 February, in a Nedbank Cup last 32 tie, set for the Chatsworth Stadium.
