The hosts nearly found themselves behind in the second minute as Daniel Msendami’s cross was intercepted by Mfanafuthi Mkhize, whose effort to clear collided with his own crossbar.
Durban City goalkeeper Darren Keet was called into action in the seventh minute, denying Siyabonga Nhlapo’s glancing header at the near post from a corner.
In the 12th minute, Trevor Mokwena missed an opportunity to put City in front as he attempted to round Agnikoi Eroine in the box and dragged his shot wide of the post.
Teboho Motloung missed an opportunity for Gallants in the 22nd minute.
City captain Siphamandla Ncanana flicked the ball backwards into the box as he attempted to clear it. Motloung hit it off the bounce, but dragged his effort wide.
In the 43rd minute, Mokwena was sent on his bike, running into the box. His shot travelled wide of the near-side post as he tried to catch Washington Arubi out.
Mokwena was involved again a minute later, laying the ball off for Haashim Domingo on the edge of the area, but Domingo was denied by Arubi.
Saziso Magawana delivered a dangerous ball into the box from a free kick in the 48th minute, finding Ncanana who was denied by Arubi as he could not get enough on the ball.
After a lack of chances in the second period, Durban City gained a spark in the 76th minute.
Domingo’s free kick rebounded off of the bodies at the edge of the box and found Mokwena, but his effort lacked power and was stopped by Arubi.
Domingo found the back of the net in the 79th minute, capitalising on a beautiful cross from substitute Samkelo Maseko.
He needed only one touch before perfectly placing his finish past Arubi.

Bahlabane Ba Ntwa will face Lamontville Golden arrows for the second time in succession as the two sides meet in the Carling Knockout semifinals this weekend.
