Chippa United leapfrogged Cape Town City in the Betway Premiership standings after running out 2-0 victors at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday, February 18.

Thabo September's side soaked up early pressure from the Citizens and struck twice through the in-form Sinoxolo Kwayiba in the second half to close within two points of the top eight in ninth place.

City suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time under Muhsin Ertugral as they dropped below the Chilli Boys on goal difference, with both teams sitting on 21 points.

The hosts almost took the lead in stunning fashion on three minutes when Prins Tjiueza spotted Stanley Nwabali off his line, but his cheeky effort sailed just over the goal.

Nwabali didn't heed the early warning and was nearly caught out again seven minutes later after Tshegofatso Nyama tried his luck from just inside the opposition's half.

The Nigerian goalkeeper was alert to the danger on 11 minutes as he pulled off a superb save to deny Thabo Nodada, who let loose from outside the area.

Ertugral's side continued to pile on the early pressure and Kayden Francis failed to beat Nwabali one-on-one in the 14th minute after latching onto Darren Keet's long ball.

However, Chippa survived the onslaught and held on to go into the break still on level pegging. The Citizens came close to breaking the deadlock in the opening minute of the second half when Francis fired over the crossbar after getting on the end of Haashim Domingo's cutback pass.

Instead it was the visitors who drew first blood on 61 minutes as Kwayiba found the back of the net to register his fifth goal of the season, with Craig Martin providing the assist.

City's evening got worse nine minutes later when Kwayiba pounced again, this time set up by Ronaldo Maarman, who made a swift impact after coming off the bench in the 66th minute.

The Mother City outfit struggled to create clear-cut chances like they did in the first half and only tested Nwabali on one occasion, with the Chilli Boys proving more clinical to claim their second win in three matches.
