Siwelele outclass Stellies at Athlone Stadium

Siwelele FC proved too strong for hosts Stellenbosch FC in a Betway Premiership match played at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Goals from Tebogo Potsane and Siviwe Magidigidi saw the team from Bloemfontein claim a 2-0 win – their second victory in succession, driving them up to 10th place on the log with 14 points from 12 matches.
It was also their first ever away win.

As for Stellies, this is a third successive loss across all competitions and left them in the relegation playoff berth (15th), with nine points from their dozen league outings.
Siwelele got off to a flying start, claiming the lead in just the third minute of the match.
Siviwe Magidigidi did great work down the left flank to hurdle a challenge before stabbing in an early low cross, which was easily turned home by Tebogo Potsane.
Stellenbosch were stunned by the early goal, but gradually asserted themselves through the course of the first half, dominating possession and forcing the visitors to defend deep.
However, Siwelele nearly doubled their advantage just after the half-hour mark, with Grant Margerman unleashing a powerful drive from long range which required a sharp save from Stellies’ Sage Stephens to keep out of the net.
A couple of minutes later a defensive error from the hosts gave Vincent Pule a sight of goal from the edge of the penalty area, but he dragged his low shot just wide of the mark.
The first half closed with Siwelele one goal to the good, and the team from Bloemfontein needed less than four minutes of the second to make it 2-0.
Potsane played a superb through ball to find Magidigidi, who cleverly rounded Stephens before shooting into an empty net to put clear daylight between the teams.
Stellenbosch had the chance to get back in the game on 65 minutes, with Muzomuhle Khanyi handed a clear sight of goal, but he sent a low drive wide of the mark – summing up the home side’s disappointing evening.
In fact, Siwelele could have made it 3-0 in the 77th minute when Margeman picked out Chibuike Ohizu in the penalty area, but the substitute striker was bravely denied by Stephens.
Stellies, to their credit, kept fighting for a way back into the game and were achingly close to a goal in the 84th minute, as a corner kick was deflected in the goal mouth and struck the woodwork before ultimately being cleared to safety by the Siwelele defence.
The teams are scheduled to return to Premiership action after the international break, with Siwelele away to AmaZulu and Stellenbosch visiting Orbit College – both on 22 November.
