Stellenbosch FC marched on in their quest for CAF football this week following a hard-fought 1-0 win against Chippa United in their latest Betway Premiership encounter at the Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday night.

Despite a valiant effort from the travelling outfit, Stellenbosch showcased their grit on home soil as Sanele Barn’s late effort separated the two sides in the Cape Winelands.

Following a rapid start by the away side, Chippa United produced the first attempts at goal in the first 10 minutes of the match.

Sinoxolo Kwayiba showcased his attacking intent as early as the third minute with a shot inside the area, while Serio Kammies looked to open the scoring from range in the fifth minute.

As the dust settled in Stellenbosch, the hosts saw most of the ball midway through the first 45 and progressively increased their activity going forward.

In what was the best chance for Stellies during the first half, Khomotjo Lekoloane struck the upright following a header inside the Chippa 18-yard-area.

With the Chilli Boys off the hook, Stellenbosch continued to probe inside the opposition half.

Chippa continued to look menacing toward the break but were unable to make the most of their scoring chances, much like that of the home team.

Stellenbosch threatened early after the restart, as seen with an attempt by Andre de Jong inside the Chippa box.

With the attacker’s effort missed to the right, the Chilli Boys regrouped in an attempt to ease off the pressure.

At the other end of the pitch, Bienvenu Eva Nga looked to cause damage with his aerial presence, however, Stellies did enough to see off the powerful forward in the 70th minute.

After piling on the pressure late on in the tie, Stellenbosch FC took the lead in the 83rd minute courtesy of a strike by Sanele Barns.

With Stellies swiftly making their way into the Chippa area, Barns made no mistake with a right-footed effort just outside the six-yard area.

Nevertheless, Stellenbosch did enough to see the game out unscathed with a 1-0 result in their favour on their own patch.
