Lamontville Golden Arrows goalkeeper Isima Watenga faces a long spell on the sidelines after sustaining a serious knee injury while representing Uganda’s Cranes.

The 30-year-old picked up the injury during a friendly against The Gambia at the Stade de Marrakech Annexe Pitch in Morocco on Monday. The game ended 1-1.

Now, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed the worst fears about the South Africa-based keeper.

“Following last night’s assessments, Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Isima Watenga has been diagnosed with a right knee ACL injury. Sadly, he will need surgery upon his return from camp,” FUFA’s statement reads.

Watenga was immediately rushed to a hospital for further medical assessment after the injury.

The Ugandan signed for Mamelodi Sundowns in 2022 from Chippa United. He was then sent to Marumo Gallants on loan, followed by yet another loan spell at Arrows last season.
