Stellenbosch FC booked their ticket to the MTN8 finals this week, following a spirited 3-1 aggregate win against Sekhukhune United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday night.

The Western Cape outfit will now meet Orlando Pirates in the final of the MTN8 tournament, owing to a 1-1 draw on away soil.

Mthetheleli Mthiyane kicked off proceedings with a goal in the 21st minute, while Sekhukhune responded with a goal by Siphesihle Mkhize moments after the hour-mark.

Stellenbosch started the game on a positive note and actively searched for an opener early on.

However, it was Sekhukhune who had the first sniff at goal after Bradley Grobler struck the upright in the fifth minute.

At the other end of the pitch, Devon Titus was presented with an opportunity to score from a corner situation, however, the Stellenbosch attacker was unable to connect with the ball following a headed attempt toward the goal.

Stellies opened the scoring in the 21st minute and added to Sekhukhune’s woes on the aggregate count.

After getting caught in possession inside their half, Mthiyane advanced toward goal before unleashing a shot from range that beat Renaldo Leaner to his bottom right.

Babina Noko saw most of the ball throughout the first 45, however, it was Stellenbosch who created the better scoring opportunities.

The game was poised at 1-0 in the Cape Winelands side’s favour at halftime.

SEKHUKHUNE EFFORTS IN VAIN

Stellenbosch looked to hit Sekhukhune on the break at the restart, while Sekhukhune probed in search of their opener.

Not holding back, Babina Noko pushed high up the pitch, which came at the cost of being exposed in transition.

Sekhukhune pulled one back in the 56th minute after Mkhize etched his name on the scoresheet.

As Babina Noko made their way up field with a well-worked passing move, Mkhize was available with a tap-in after a squared pass into the area by right-back Tsepo Matsimbi.

Eric Tinkler’s side pushed for a second goal toward the closing stages of the match, only to be denied by Stellies on numerous occasions.

Sekhukhune’s efforts proved futile at the end of the 90 minutes as Stellenbosch walked away with a 3-1 win on aggregate.
