EU chief Ursula von der Leyen on Monday celebrated Europe's Ryder Cup win over the United States, after a torrid reception for its players from American fans.

"Congratulations to Team Europe for its incredible achievement in retaining the Ryder Cup," von der Leyen wrote on X.

"A shining example of European team spirit and unity. Money can't buy this."

Europe on Sunday held off a late rally from the US team in the singles to clinch a 15-13 victory in the cauldron of the Bethpage Black course in New York state.

The victory comes as relations between Europe and the United States have been strained by mercurial President Donald Trump.

Trump - a keen golfer - attended the start of the event to help gee up the US team and the vast crowds.

But the atmosphere turned rancorous during the tournament as US fans sparked the ire of European players with abusive chants and heckling.

On Saturday, Rory McIlroy swore at hecklers who disturbed the Northern Irishman on a number of occasions as he tried to make putts.

His playing partner on Saturday, Irishman Shane Lowry, was also targeted by the crowd

"It was intense. It was like something I've never experienced," said Lowry, who was to go on on Sunday to sink the putt that ensured Europe retained the trophy.
