Ten things we learned this week in LaLiga EA Sports
What has been going on in LaLiga this past week? Here are 10 of the top stories, from Valencia’s win at the Bernabéu to the Copa del Rey semifinal results.
It was a week of big results, some of them major shocks, in LaLiga EA Sports and also in the Copa del Rey. The most eye-catching storylines are outlined below.
VALENCIA CF WIN AT THE BERNABÉU FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 17 YEARS
A 95th-minute Hugo Duro goal earned Valencia CF a 2-1 victory away at Real Madrid in Matchday 30, their first win against Los Blancos at the Bernabéu since 2008. It was also their first away win this entire LaLiga EA Sports season.
THE WINNING RUNS OF FC BARCELONA AND REAL BETIS BOTH COME TO AN END
FC Barcelona could only half-capitalise on Real Madrid’s defeat, as the Catalan side shared the spoils as they played out a 1-1 draw at home to Real Betis. Both clubs entered this match with impressive winning runs in league play, of nine in a row in the case of Barça and six on the bounce for Los Verdiblancos, but both those streaks have now ended.
RCD ESPANYOL PRODUCE ONE OF THE SHOCKS OF THE SEASON
One of the most eye-catching results of the matchday was RCD Espanyol’s 4-0 victory away at Rayo Vallecano. Considering their positions in the table ahead of this game, Rayo Vallecano were the clear favourites, but Los Pericos destroyed the capital city side thanks to goals from Leandro Cabrera, Roberto Fernández, Javi Puado and Pere Milla.
DEPORTIVO ALAVES PULL AWAY FROM THE DROP ZONE
Another relegation-battling club who secured an important away victory this past matchday was Deportivo Alavés, who triumphed 1-0 away at Girona FC thanks to a goal from Carlos Vicente. That means the Basque side are now three points ahead of relegation rivals CD Leganés, who play on Monday night.
RC CELTA ARE DREAMING OF EUROPE
RC Celta are in excellent form, having won five and drawn three of their past eight LaLiga EA Sports fixtures, most recently winning 2-1 at RCD Mallorca. Those results have propelled them up into seventh place in the table, so the fans in Vigo can begin to dream about a return to European football.
ATLÉTICO DE MADRID WIN WITH ANOTHER STOPPAGE TIME GOAL
For the fifth time this LaLiga EA Sports season, Atlético de Madrid have won a match thanks to a winning goal scored in the 90th minute or later. This time it was Pablo Barrios in the 93rd minute who earned Atleti a 2-1 victory away at Sevilla FC.
THE SPOILS ARE SHARED BETWEEN VILLARREAL CF AND ATHLETIC CLUB
There was no change in the standings in the race for fourth place, with fourth-placed Athletic Club earning a goalless draw away at Villarreal CF on Sunday. That result means the Basque side remain six points ahead of both Villarreal CF and also Real Betis.
YURI BERCHICHE SIGNS A ONE-YEAR EXTENSION IN BILBAO
There was a contract renewal at Athletic Club this past week, with Yuri Berchiche extending his deal until the summer of 2026. He has been with the Basque club since 2018 and can further add to his legacy next season.
THE COPA DEL REY FINAL IS SET
The Copa del Rey semifinal second legs took place last week, and Real Madrid and FC Barcelona prevailed to set up a blockbuster final at the Estadio de La Cartuja on April 26th. The two historic rivals will face off in the showpiece event, after overcoming Real Sociedad and Atlético de Madrid respectively last midweek.
THIRD AND FOURTH OFFER QUALIFICATION FOR THE SPANISH SUPER CUP
Now that we know the two Copa del Rey finalists, and given that it’s the two clubs currently first and second in LaLiga EA Sports, that has implications on what the positions in the table might mean for certain clubs. It means one extra European spot will be decided through the league standings.
And, it means the other two Spanish Super Cup tickets would, as things stand, go to third-placed Atlético de Madrid and fourth-placed Athletic Club.
