Matchday 30 of this LaLiga EA Sports season will go down in Spanish football history. For the first time ever, there were seven away victories, and three draws too, in the same matchday. Only FC Barcelona, Villarreal CF and CD Leganés avoided defeat out of the home sides, but even still all three of those clubs dropped points.

It’s the fourth time that a matchday in Spain’s top flight finished with no home victory, but never with so many away wins. It previously happened in Matchday 17 of the 1992/93 season, Matchday 33 of 2002/03 and Matchday 32 of 2005/06, but always with more draws than away victories.

As for matchdays with seven away victories, this has happened on four previous occasions. The last time was in Matchday 33 of 2021/22, while the other three times it occurred were Matchday 37 in 1995/96, Matchday 30 in 2010/11 and Matchday 4 in 2014/15.

ONLY BARCELONA, VILLARREAL CF AND CD LEGANÉS RESISTED THE AWAY WIN PHENOMENON

Only three teams who played at home avoided defeat. FC Barcelona drew 1-1 against Real Betis at the Estadi Olímpic, in a match between the division’s two most in-form teams, who entered the matchday having won nine and six league games in a row, respectively.

Meanwhile, Villarreal CF earned a goalless draw at home against Athletic Club in a direct duel for Uefa Champions League qualification, while the Monday night clash between CD Leganés and CA Osasuna ended in a 1-1 sharing of the spoils.

VALENCIA CF WON AWAY FOR THE FIRST TIME AND RCD ESPANYOL WON BIG IN VALLECAS

For Valencia CF and RCD Espanyol, their weekend was a spectacular one. The former secured their first away win of the season, at the Bernabéu no less, as they defeated Real Madrid 2-1 courtesy of a 95th-minute Hugo Duro goal.

In the case of Los Pericos, they kicked off the matchday on Friday night with a dominant 4-0 triumph away at Rayo Vallecano. That has helped them massively in their relegation battle.

The other away wins were secured by RC Celta at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, Getafe CF at the Estadio José Zorrilla, Atlético de Madrid at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, Real Sociedad at the Estadio de Gran Canaria and Deportivo Alavés at the Estadi Montilivi.

It truly was a weekend to remember for the away teams in LaLiga EA Sports.
