Khumalo eyes strong Cosafa start against Mozambique

South Africa head coach Vela Khumalo is fully focused as his side prepares to take on Mozambique in the opening match of the 2025 Cosafa Cup at Free State Stadium on Wednesday. Kick-off is set for 3pm CAT, live on SuperSport.
The showdown between these neighbouring nations marks the beginning of what Khumalo hopes will be a successful campaign in this year’s regional tournament. Speaking ahead of the clash, he stressed the importance of "getting off to a winning start".
CONFIDENT APPROACH AND PAST SUCCESS
“We had a good session,” Khumalo said. “This isn’t my first time in this position—I’m the defending champion because we won Cosafa before, and I was head coach alongside Morena Ramoreboli back then.”
Khumalo explained that "shifting from coaching the U17 national team at Afcon to leading the senior squad" wasn’t a major leap. He believes his experience at youth level has given him "a strong foundation", as core principles, strategies, and challenges remain consistent across different age groups.
“From Bafana Bafana to DDC, from DDC to U17, and from U17 back to Bafana Bafana—it’s not much of a gap,” he noted. “It’s all about how you impart knowledge to the senior players. This is a talented squad, and many of these boys I’ve coached before, so it’s a smooth transition for me.”
DETERMINED TO SECURE EARLY MOMENTUM
Khumalo emphasized that his team is fully focused on securing a victory in their opening match. He believes a strong start will allow his side to implement their playing philosophy with confidence.
“Our priority is to win the first game so we can settle in and play the way we want—keeping possession, staying organized, and executing South Africa’s football identity,” he stated.
“Winning puts us in a good space, allowing us to explore new tactical approaches. We’re optimistic about getting it right.”
