Mokoena stars as Downs thump City in Diski Festival
Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Bennet Mokoena was the star of the show in the DStv Diski Challenge festival held at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium this past weekend. Most people may not know much about the 18-year-old, but certainly after the weekend's match, they will now be familiar with him.
Undoubtedly, there would also be a lot expected from the promising youngster. On Saturday in the Diski Challenge, Mokoena scored four goals when Sundowns mopped the floor with Durban City FC, beating them 5-2.
City were the first to find the back of the net through their star striker Lindokuhle Chonco inside the first 10 minutes of the match. However, their celebrations were cut short as Mokoena made it his show with an equaliser in the 12th minute.
Four minutes later, Mokoena doubled the lead from a penalty spot. He never stopped as he also scored in the 27th, 42nd and 43rd minutes, taking the match to halftime with Sundowns leading 5-1.
In the second half, Sundowns were expected to continue with their scoring spree, but that did not happen. Later in the match, Chonco scored the second goal for Durban City from a penalty kick after they were fouled inside the box.
TS GALAXY 1-0 KAIZER CHIEFS
In other Diski Challenge matches, Kaizer Chiefs suffered their first defeat in the league when they lost 1-0 to TS Galaxy FC on Sunday. Chiefs goalkeeper Naphtali Mokoena and defender Gopolang Taunyana made a blunder which resulted in an own goal that handed TS Galaxy all three points.
ORLANDO PIRATES 1-0 CHIPPA UNITED
Pirates earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Chippa United on Sunday. Thuso Sesipi came from the bench to score the only goal for Pirates in the dying minutes of the match.
Chippa United goalkeeper Tini Tango produced 10 out of 10 performances in this match despite his side losing. He saved Chippa from the blushes as he even saved a penalty, ensuring his side remains in the game.
STELLENBOSCH FC 2-0 RICHARDS BAY FC
Stellenbosch returned to winning ways, beating table-toppers Richards Bay 2-0 at the Idas Valley Stadium. Zaydee Marang and Turic Gamildien scored for Stellies the two crucial goals for coach Evangelos Vellios' charges as they chase history of becoming the first team to win the league three times.
