Sundowns top all-time PSL table ahead of 900th game
Mamelodi Sundowns’ comfortable home victory over Magesi in the Betway Premiership on Sunday marked their 899th league game in the Premier Soccer League and they will get to 900 on Wednesday when they go up against Marumo Gallants in Bloemfontein.
Sundowns, chasing an unprecedented ninth successive league title, will be the first club to reach the 900-game mark, just ahead of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, who are the other two teams who have been in each of the 29 seasons since the PSL was launched in 1996.
Chiefs will play their 899th on Tuesday when they go up against Sekhukhune United but Orlando Pirates have had their scheduled midweek match postponed because they are in African Champions League action this weekend.
Sundowns, who are unbeaten this season and took over at the top of the Betway Premiership standings on Sunday, are closing in on 500 wins, having won their 495th with the 3-0 triumph over Magesi in Atteridgeville. Their overall points haul is now 1717, far exceeding Pirates in second place with 1547 points and Chiefs with 1531.
Pirates have 420 wins in 897 outings and Chiefs 416 but AmaKhosi have played one league match more.
There are a total of 53 clubs who have competed in the PSL since its launch, which marked changing the scheduling of the South African season from inclusive of the calendar year to a season start in August and a May finish. The reason at the time was to follow the European calendar and try to attract many overseas clubs to South Africa in the off-season but the weakness of the Rand has seen those plans long abandoned.

AmaZulu sit ninth on the all-time table with 802 points from 684 league matches with Chippa United in 19thplace, Polokwane City in 21st spot, Stellenbosch 23rd and TS Galaxy 24th.
This season sees three newcomers to the PSL in Durban City, Orbit College and Siwelele.
