SOWETO DERBY: All you need to know
Orlando Pirates go into the Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium looking to complete a double over Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership.
The match is on this Saturday, 3 May at 3pm (CAT, GMT+2) on the SuperSport PSL channel, as well as on Showmax.
Build-up is from 1:30pm, and the wrap from 5-6pm, so sit back for four and a half hours of Soweto-inspired football drama, see TV Guide for more details.
The Buccaneers defeated Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in the first league meeting of the season courtesy of a cheeky 96th-minute penalty from Patrick Maswanganyi, making it five wins in a row in the 55-year history of South Africa’s greatest sporting rivalry.
Coach Jose Riveiro’s team won both league games last season and the Nedbank Cup semifinal in 2023.
They are now seeking an unprecedented sixth successive victory that would not only give them major bragging rights but also help in their bid for the Betway Premiership title.
There has been no draw in a competitive fixture between the teams since a 2-2 stalemate in the Telkom Knockout in 2019, which the AmaKhosi won on penalties.
SEASON FORM GUIDE
After 20 games, Pirates are still in the title race with 15 wins, one draw, and four losses.
Those defeats came from Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Cape Town City and Marumo Gallants.
Their single draw so far came against Stellenbosch and they trail leaders Sundowns by 12 points, albeit with three games in hand.
Meanwhile, Chiefs under new coach Nasreddine Nabi are having a season to forget as they find themselves fighting for a place in the top eight.
A win against Pirates would be a massive boost for them.
Chiefs have featured in 24 league games, winning eight, drawing four and losing ten.
Despite their struggles in the league, Chiefs have booked a place in the final of the Nedbank Cup on 10 May, which could serve as a morale booster.
