Kalou finds a second home at Amakhosi Village

Kaizer Chiefs played host to a special guest on Wednesday as former Chelsea and Ivory Coast star Salomon Kalou visited the iconic Amakhosi Village. Kalou is in South Africa as a UEFA Champions League analyst for SuperSport, and he took time out to connect with the club he’s long admired.

“I’m truly impressed by the facilities and the warm welcome,” said the 2012 Champions League winner. “I’ve always admired Kaizer Chiefs — they wear the same colours as my first club, ASEC Mimosas.”

Kalou’s admiration for Chiefs runs deep. Alongside his brother Bonaventure Kalou, also a former Ivorian international, the duo grew up idolising Doctor Khumalo, the legendary Amakhosi midfielder. “My brother was even nicknamed Doctor Khumalo as a kid,” Salomon shared. “He wore number 15 throughout his career, inspired by Doctor. We learned a lot from watching Chiefs play.”

Khumalo, affectionately known as 16V, made a special appearance to meet Kalou, and even spoke to Bonaventure over the phone. Touched by their words, Khumalo said, “It’s humbling to know that our football inspired players like Salomon and Bonaventure to reach great heights.”

Club Chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung also welcomed Kalou, reflecting on his own journey: “I returned to South Africa in 1969 to help inspire future generations. Hearing how Chiefs influenced you and your brother is deeply motivating.”

Motaung extended an open invitation to Kalou: “Whenever you’re in Johannesburg, reach out to Doctor. This is your home now — you’re part of the Chiefs family.”

Khumalo echoed the sentiment, saying, “I’ll gladly host Salomon anytime. Our chairman’s gesture shows the heart of this club.”

Kalou left Naturena with gratitude and inspiration, vowing to apply the experience to his football academy in Ivory Coast.
