The Sunrisers Hyderabad secured a five-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings in an Indian Premier League basement battle at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday evening.

Ishan Kishan top-scored with a 34-ball 44 as the Sunrisers reached 155 for five with eight balls to spare in reply to Chennai’s 154 all out after Pat Cummins had won the toss, asking MS Dhoni’s Super Kings to bat first.

What seemed to be a relatively easy target of 155, was made heavy weather of as Abhishek Sharma departed without scoring off the second ball of the chase, chipping a delivery from Khaleel Ahmed (3-0-21-1) straight to Ayush Mhatre in the covers.

Travis Head struck four boundaries from 16 balls before being castled by Anshul Kamboj (3-0-16-1) for just 19. South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen manged just seven runs before launching Ravindra Jadeja (3.4-0-22-1) straight down the throat of Deepak Hooda at long on.

Kishan, who struck five boundaries and a six, eventually fell, with Sam Curran taking an excellent catch at deep-mid-wicket from the bowling of Noor Ahmed (4-0-42-2), who struggled with his footing, bowling two no-balls on the night.

However, Kamindu Mendis and Nitish Kumar Reddy finished off the chase with an unbroken stand of 49 from 31 balls to seal the victory and move the mend from Hyderabad two points clear of the bottom placed Super Kings.

Mendis struck three fours in 22 balls for his unbeaten 32 while Reddy finished off on 19 not out from 13 balls with two boundaries under his belt.

Earlier, a wonderful bowling spell from medium-pacer Harshal Patel, helped restrict the home side to just 154, finishing with figures of 4-28 in his four overs. Patel was well supported by his captain Cummins (4-0-21-2) and Jaydev Unadkat (2.5-021-2).

Shaik Rasheed was out first ball, edging Mohammad Shami (3-0-28-1) straight to Sharma at first slip. Curran lasted 10 balls before being caught by Aniket Verma on the mid-wicket fence for just nine. Mhatre struck six boundaries in his 19-ball knock of 30 before handing Cummins his first wicket, caught by Kishan at mid-off.

The Chennai middle-order all got starts but were unable to convert with Jadeja (21), Shivam Dube (12) and Hooda (22) all failing to kick-on. Only South Africa’s Dewald Brevis impressed, cracking just one four and four maximums from 25 balls before being brilliantly caught on the long-off fence by Medis from the bowling of Patel for 42.

The rest of the Super Kings’ batting line-up offered little to the scoring as Dhoni (6), Kamboj (2) and Noor Ahmad (2) fell away quickly, leaving Khaleel Ahmad unbeaten on a single.

The Sunrisers move up one place, to eighth place out of 10 on six points while Chennai remain rooted to the foot on four points – with both sides having played nine matches. Sunrisers face-up against the table-topping Gujurat Titans next while Chennai have to find a way past the Punjab Kings, who sit mid-table.
