After ousting Zamalek, Stellenbosch take aim at AmaZulu

After claiming the most famous victory in their club’s history, Stellenbosch FC will look to claim three Betway Premiership points when they host AmaZulu FC in a re-scheduled fixture at the Danie Craven Stadium on the evening of Tuesday 15 April 2025.
Kick-off is at 7.30pm CAT.
Match background
Stellenbosch come into this match on the back of a stunning 1-0 away win over Egyptian heavyweights Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup last Wednesday. Sihle Nduli’s lone goal in Cairo saw the Cape side overcome the White Knights by the same score on aggregate and advance into the final four of a continental competition for the first time.
Steve Barker’s side suffered a 1-0 away loss to Magesi FC in their last Premiership match, played in late March, ending a seven-game unbeaten run in the domestic league, but they remain well placed: fifth on the log, but with games in hand on TS Galaxy and Sekhukhune United in fourth and third place respectively.
As for AmaZulu, they made a much-needed return to form in their last league outing on April 4 when they defeated Richards Bay 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Taariq Fieles. They have previously gone on a run in which they took just one point from a possible 12.
Usuthu are placed seventh on the log and looking strong contenders for a top-eight finish, though with just a few matches left in their campaign they will need to make the most of their opportunities and ensure that those with extra fixtures to fulfil, such as Kaizer Chiefs, Chippa United and Golden Arrows, are not able to close the gap.
What the teams are saying
Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker on his side’s progress in African club competition:
“It’s good that there is a certain region that can compete against the giants of African football, which is the North Africans. So, we are very proud of what we are doing.”
AmaZulu FC coach Arthur Zwane on pushing for a top-three finish this season:
“The ball is in our hands. It's all up to us if we want to go and play in the Confederation Cup ... it is all up to us. It is how we are going to execute ourselves in the next coming games. We need to win all the games and when I look at the squad we have assembled, the character we've shown this season is good.”
Key players
Stellenbosch FC: Devin Titus
A versatile and determined forward, Devin Titus will look to lead Stellenbosch to a midweek home win over AmaZulu. The 23-year-old is a rising star in South African football and is set to feature strongly as Stellies chase their ambitions both at home and abroad.
AmaZulu FC: Elmo Kambindu
To break down Stellenbosch’s resilient and disciplined defence, AmaZulu will need a player like Elmo Kambindu to be at his best. The experienced Namibian’s running power and energy will stretch the hosts’ backline and create space for others to thrive.
Head-to-head
In head-to-head stats, Stellenbosch and AmaZulu have met in 11 league matches since 2019/20, with Usuthu claiming four wins compared to three for Stellies, while three games have been drawn.
However, in the teams’ most recent meeting, in January in Durban, Stellenbosch claimed an emphatic 5-0 win thanks to goals from Khomotjo Lekoloane, Devin Titus (two), Chumani Butsaka and Ibraheem Jabaar.
