Ozoemena saves the day for Amakhosi
The DStv Diski Challenge title race looks set to go down the wire. As things stand, the DDC champions could be decided on the final day, 4 May 2025.
This comes after both Kazer Chiefs, who are the log leaders with 58 points and second placed Stellenbosch FC with 57 points, maintained their impressive run this past weekend collecting maximum points in their respective matches.
On Saturday, Stellies came from 2-0 down to claim a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Richards Bay FC. The Winelands side were 2-0 behind at halftime after Ntlonelo Bomelo's two quick goals in the 31st and 38th minute of the game.
However, the reigning champions showed grit and a champion mentality when they won the match with goals from Kenan Johannesen, Tylon Smith and an own goal that was scored by Sibangani Zulu. That victory saw them moving to the top of the log for one day.
On Sunday, Chiefs fought tooth and nail to earn a 1-0 victory over TS Galaxy which saw them retaining their top spot with 58 points, one ahead of Stellies. Manqoba Ozoemena came from the bench and scored the most crucial goal for Amakhosi at the packed Suga Ray Xulu Stadium.
Galaxy brought their A game and should have punished Chiefs on several occasions but Chiefs goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba displayed a brilliant performance on the day.
Chiefs also had their fair share of opportunities but the defying moment came in the 76th minute when Ozoemena broke the deadlock and his goal proved enough to earn them maximum points.
