Rain had the final say in the Tata Indian Premier League contest between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals at Hyderabad on Monday evening.

The Capitals, who were asked to bat first, mounted a total of 133-7 in 20 overs.

However, rain prevented the teams from taking to the field after the innings break.

The two teams will share points, getting a point each.

The Capitals remain in fifth position despite the extra point. However, they have closed the gap between them and the fourth-placed Gujarat Titans, whom they now trail by a single point.

This means that their playoff dream is still alive. A loss would have scuppered it.

They will meet the Punjab Kings, Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians in their next three matches.

The Sunrisers, on the other hand, are already out of the running for a spot in the playoffs after an underwhelming season.

That said, the result helps them take a step up, going from ninth to eighth place, one point ahead of the Rajasthan Royals, whom they have overtaken.

CUMMINS DELIGHTS SUNRISERS FANS

Earlier in the evening, Pat Cummins had treated Sunrisers fans to a spectacle of new-ball bowling.

The Sunrisers' captain ripped the heart out of the Capitals' top order by taking three wickets with the first balls of the first, third, and fifth overs of the powerplay.

The Sunrisers captain kept targeting the hard length and was so miserly he conceded eight runs in his first couple of overs.

The Australian finished his first spell with three wickets for 12 runs.

Cummins was an omnipresent force in Delhi's destruction. The 31-year-old ran 14 metres to complete a catch that left the visitors floundering on 26-4 after the first six overs.

Cummins's star was shining brightly, and the Sunrisers captain finished the match with three wickets for 19 runs in four overs.

Jaydev Unadkat, Harshal Patel and Eshan Malinga took a wicket each as they stifled the Capitals' progress.

SHARMA AND STUBBS RESCUE CAPITALS

The visitors' hope for an imposing total lay on KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs' ability to stay in the middle for an extended period.

That plan was scuttled by Jaydev Unadkat. The pacer dismissed Rahul for only 10 runs.

The India international was the first Capitals batter to reach double figures. His departure spelt more trouble for the visitors.

Things went from bad to worse when Stubbs's promising partnership with Vipraj Nigam collapsed after adding 33 runs to the total because they miscommunicated and Nigam was run out.

The procession of wickets compelled the Capitals to bring in an impact sub early.

They brought on Ashutosh Sharma. The 26-year-old performed heroics for the Capitals when they faced Lucknow Super Giants early in the season.

Ashutosh smashed an unbeaten 66 off 31 balls as he dragged the Capitals off the canvas to steer them to a one-wicket victory in that match.

On Monday, Ashutosh blazed his way to 41 off 26 deliveries to inspire the Capitals to a total beyond 120.

He combined with Stubbs for a 66-run seventh-wicket partnership. Stubbs anchored the knock with his unbeaten 41 off 36 balls.
