Wins give Kaizer Chiefs some peace
Winning their opening two Betway Premiership games of the season offers Kaizer Chiefs the opportunity to work in serenity over the coming weeks, said acting coach Cedric Kaze after their 1-0 win over Polokwane City at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.
Chiefs share the top of the league standings with Durban City, Marumo Gallants and Sekhukhune United after their midweek victory, which followed a 2-0 triumph over Stellenbosch in their opening game of the new league season on Sunday.
“It's true that, especially when you are at big clubs like Kaizer Chiefs, it gives you time to work in peace, because when you don't win, then there is a lot of pressure,” he explained.
“That's why those points, those victories, they give you time to work easier, in a more easy way because people are confident, people are happy.”
But he also cautioned it was still the early stages of the new season.
“We need, as well, to know that we haven't arrived and we're still very, very far. We have to work very hard and I'm pretty sure that if everyone is pulling in the same direction, we will get it right,” said Kaze.
Chiefs edged Polokwane City with a late goal from new signing Siphesihle Ndlovu, but laboured through much of the match.
“It was a game that we were expecting, playing against a physical team, low block, mid block, transition, counterattack, set pieces.
“In the first half, I would say that we had control of the game, but a lot of technical mistakes, and that caused a little bit of frustration. We took much time to decide what we're going to do, and especially against a low block team, when you get into the final four, you need to accelerate a little bit, to be precise as well in your passing, to have more options with the running,” he added.
“In the second half, we had more tempo, and we were happy that the players coming from the bench made an impact. But we mustn’t forget that this was a second game in three days for the players. Physically, it was very, very tough for everyone, and we are very happy to have the three points today. It changes the tone of everything now.”
