Stellenbosch FC's head coach, Steve Barker, has lauded the significant influence of the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) following the recognition of one of its prominent graduates, Tylon Smith. The 20-year-old defender has made waves by being named among the top three contenders for the prestigious CAF Young Player of the Year award.

Smith finds himself in esteemed company, shortlisted alongside Morocco's rising stars, Adbellah Ouazane of Ajax Amsterdam and Othmane Maamma of Watford. Despite his impressive nomination, it was Maamma who ultimately took home the honour, having shone brightly during Morocco's triumphant Under-20 World Cup campaign, where he clinched the coveted golden ball.

Smith, a proud graduate of DDC, showcased his remarkable talent as a key player for Stellenbosch, where he had an outstanding season in the Reserve League. His contributions were pivotal in leading Amajita to their historic Youth Championship title in May of this year.

His exceptional performances earned him the coveted Player of the Tournament award at the Under-20 Afcon, highlighting his prowess on the continental stage. The crescendo of his burgeoning career came with his transfer to Queens Park Rangers in the English Championship, a move that signifies the high potential and bright future that lies ahead for this rising star.

"I am very proud of the Diski Challenge programme and the opportunity it has given to the youngsters. Right now, we have a player who went from not playing a single minute in the PSL to going straight to the Championship, which is something monumental," said Barker.

The 57-year-old mentor admitted that he would have loved to work with Smith in the senior team; however, at the same time, they were not going to deprive him of an opportunity to go abroad.

Explained Barker: "It was a bittersweet moment for us when he left. We were and are still happy for him; at the same time, we wish he had a season or two with the first team. However, we were not going to deny him that opportunity; he deserved the move."

The reigning champions of the Diski Challenge, Kaizer Chiefs, are set to embark on an ambitious tour of the United Kingdom, a prestigious reward for their recent league victory. As part of this international expedition, the celebrated squad will showcase their talent in a series of friendly matches, culminating in a highly anticipated clash against Queen's Park Rangers.

In a show of support, Barker has extended his best wishes to the players, urging them to seize this opportunity and perform to the best of their abilities across the pond. "You never know who is watching," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of making the most of their moment on the international stage.
