Durban City FC coach Daine Klate has praised the character displayed by his players and urged them to stay humble after achieving their first victory of the season in the DStv Diski Challenge.

The Durban-based outfit has had a tough run in its first season in the league. They started the campaign with a 3-3 draw against Orlando Pirates. That was followed by a 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy before being thumped by Sundowns 5-2 at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium.

However, this past weekend, they dusted themselves off and displayed a five-star performance to beat Magesi FC 5-0 at Chatsworth Stadium, recording their first win of the season.

Talking after the match, Klate admitted it has not been easy for a first new team as most of them are going through their firsts, from flying for the first time to sleeping at the hotels for the first time, so it was bound to be like this.

He said: "Our players are new in this professional setup. Last week we had a lot of players who never flown, who never been at the hotel so it is overwhelming for them but that is no excuse."

Klate added: "It is good for the confidence of the boys especially after getting five last week (against Sundowns) and scoring five this weekend (to win) it is showing character. The season is still very long; we should not get carried away by the scoreline."

After four games, Durban City are in position 12 with four points. The former Chippa United coach admitted that they are still working on progress.

"There's still a lot of work that needs to be done. We are still a brand-new team; we are not an end product as yet. We are taking positives from this one. For me it is all about patience factor. There's a lot of work that still needs to be done."

City's next assignment is on Sunday as they travel to face Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, 10am.
