Relegated Cape Town City have appointed Dutch coach Jan Vreman to engineer quick promotion back to the Betway Premiership.

The 59-year-old will be tasked with seeing the club back up to the top flight after their shock demotion after failing in the end-of-season promotion-relegation playoffs.

City gave no details of his contract terms when making the announcement on Monday, but Vreman arrives in South Africa after spending his entire playing and coaching career at De Graafschap in the Netherlands, most of it in the second tier of the Dutch league.

He won the club promotion in 2015.

City had previously lined up another Dutch coach, Andries Ulderink, to take over next season, but after the club’s relegation, he has gone to German club Bayer Leverkusen as assistant to Erik ten Hag.

Vreman will have to work with a revamped squad after City last week announced the departure of nine players, including skipper Thamsanqa Mkhize and midfielder Thabo Nodada, who had been at the club from their first season in the top flight after owner John Comitis bought the Mpumalanga Black Aces franchise in 2016 and moved it to the Mother City.

Others who have left are goalkeeper Darren Keet, Darwin Gonzalez, Fortune Makaringe, Lorenzo Gordinho, Haashim Domingo, Kamohelo Mokotjo, and Elson Sithole.
